How To Start a New Document
There are three techniques for starting a new Document.
- Using the Global Search a.k.a. Awesome Bar
- Using the Document List
- Using a Link Field / Dynamic Link Field
Using the Global Search
Example

- Click in the Global Search and search for "
new [DocType]" where[DocType]represents the type of Document you want to create. For example, "new Contact". - Find the "new [DocType]" option and click on it.
Alternatively, you may hit Enter, which brings up the search dialog. Click the "Create a new..." option on the left, then click on the appropriate option in the resulting filter.
When To Use
Use this method when you're looking for the fastest way to start a new Document, and you aren't already in the relevant Document List or creating a new Document.
Using the Document List
Example

- Open the appropriate Document List by nagivagating or using the Global Search.
- Click on the blue "New" button in the upper-right.
When To Use
Use this method when you are already in the Document List, or if you like having a sense of place.
Using a Link Field / Dynamic Link Field
Example

If the field is a Dynamic Link Field, begin by selecting the appropriate DocType in the previous field.
- View the available Link Field Documents by clicking in the field.
- You can now:
- filter for available Documents by typing in the Link Field,
- select the Document you want to link to, or
- create a new linkable Document (scroll to the bottom of the list of options and click the "+ Create a new [DocType]" option).
Hitting "Save" while creating a new Document started from a Link Field will return you to the previous form. The Link Field will automatically have the new Document selected. You may need to hit "Save" a second time to be taken back to the previous form.
Tip
Creating new Documents from a Link field allows you to layer new Documents efficiently, it should be used with care, since there are situations when working in multiple tabs can lead to a loss of work while multi-tasking.
Here are a couple rules of thumb to use to decide if you should create a new Document from a Link Field:
- When the Document you wish to create is relatively simple (e.g. Contacts, Addresses).
- When the Document doesn't stand on it's own (e.g. Reservations).
- When you don't expect to be interrupted, you are in the middle of a form, and you want to create and link to the new Document in one step.
